Why I Wrote LoveMusik by Alfred Uhury
Harold Prince called me into his office and he said, “You’ve been married a long time and I’ve been married a long time and we both know what it means to make it work.” Then he handed me a volume of the letters of Kurt Weill and Lotte Lenya, written over the nearly thirty year span of their relationship. Their way of making it work is certainly not my way, nor is it Hal’s way, I’m sure. No two long term marriages are the same, but in a sense they all are. All of us learn to do whatever it takes to keep it going.
Of course Kurt Weill and Lotte Lenya happened to be fascinating people anyway, and the lives they led were loaded with color and high drama. And they were funny, in the bargain... It also doesn’t hurt that their joint and separate contributions to musical theatre are legendary. Could there be better material for a musical?
The best thing about this job is that I get to hear Michael Cerveris and Donna Murphy and all these gifted people sing these gold standard songs over and over again. No, the best thing about this job is working with Hal again.
No. It’s all good. |
